With the advice of local organizations, we visit villages known to be home to families in extreme poverty. There our team conducts interviews and determines which families are in greatest need. Construction timetables are established for each home, volunteers teams are scheduled, and materials are purchased.

Using volunteers from San Miguel, visiting internationals, paid Mexican skilled laborers and future homeowners, Casita Linda builds vaulted roof adobe block houses including a loft for family sleeping quarters or storage. Mattresses, made from recycled plastic bags, covered in sturdy fabrics, are made for the families by members of St. Paul’s Church in San Miguel de Allende.

Our homes feature a locking door, windows with screens and glass and outdoor wash basins. Solar panels supply electricity. We are including simple water catchment systems.

Adobe brick has been used in Mexico for centuries. But today adobe is often only a crumbling relic of a bygone era, as are the skills to manufacture and use it. What Casita Linda is demonstrating, however, is the opportunity adobe represents to provide impoverished rural communities with the skills to build and maintain their own homes. We are in the process of putting together a manual so that Casita Linda's processes can be duplicated in other areas.

Casita Linda homes are fully funded through donations from individuals, service organizations and private foundations.
